For the past 8 or 9 years (I can’t exactly remember) I have been coming to Summerville South Carolina for one week every summer to participate in a service camp called Salkehatchie. This camp is an outreach ministry of the United Methodist Church where youth and adult volunteers from all over the state travel to a different part of the state to help do home repair for families that are in need. (Everything from minor things like painting and cleaning to major construction like rebuilding roofs and bathrooms from the ground up are undertaken at camp.)
For the past 5 years I have been the Summerville camp’s photographer, traveling from site to site photographing the progress made each day and preparing a slide show of the day’s progress each night to be played after worship. (Not every camp has this feature.)
This year is no different except I also gained the responsibilities of monitoring the soundboard and running the media display during worship (the projector/display that shows the words to the songs, points of the sermon, etc.). It has been fun although I was not expecting to have to be doing these extra things this year (our normal guy is busy at another service camp in Africa this year), but I actually really enjoyed the first night of work. It is nice to be able to work all of the media and contribute to the camp in a way that really utilizes all my strengths.
I am happy to be here and really looking forward to the chance to get some great photos this week. Stay tuned for daily(ish) updates!
